Surviving the System
LET'S
THRIVE!
“Surviving the System” is our flagship program built specifically for youth impacted by systems of control.
Whether you’ve aged out of foster care, returned from juvenile detention, or exited a group home or probation system — we know what that transition feels like. And we’re here for you.
We help young adults ages 18 to 30 get the tools, support, and community they need to build their future. This includes:
• Housing support
• Mental health counseling
• Job training & employment help
• GED and education support
• Life skills coaching
• Reentry guidance
• LGBTQ+ affirming space
• Peer mentoring from people who’ve lived it
Our goal: Survival, healing, and transformation — on your own terms.
Why Surviving the System
Founded in 2013, Living Waters Youth Inc. is a Minneapolis-based nonprofit dedicated to uplifting and empowering at-risk youth and young adults. Our Surviving the System program focuses on serving individuals ages 18-30 who are navigating foster care transitions, probation, housing instability, trafficking, or domestic violence.
For many participants, our program is more than support—it is a safe haven where they can heal, learn, and begin building a foundation for long-term stability. We offer trauma-informed care, mentorship, and housing navigation to ensure each young person has the tools they need to move toward independence.
Education & Skill Building
We prioritize education and workforce readiness through tutoring, job readiness workshops, and hands-on life skills training. From financial literacy to conflict resolution, we help youth gain the practical knowledge needed to thrive in adulthood.

Community Connection
At Living Waters, we know that true resilience is built in community. Through group workshops, peer mentorship, and cultural connection activities, participants find belonging and build supportive networks that extend beyond our walls. We foster an environment where youth feel seen, valued, and equipped to not just survive—but thrive.
The name Surviving the System reflects our mission to guide at-risk youth and young adults through the challenges of institutional systems, providing positive alternatives, instilling hope, and promoting self-sufficiency and empowerment.
At Living Waters, we carry that vision forward by reminding every young person: your life matters, your future matters, and your voice matters.
Structured Support & Guidance
Our program pairs participants with caring mentors who provide guidance, accountability, and encouragement. With personalized case management and connections to HUD, DHS, and Hennepin County programs, we ensure participants have access to housing subsidies, mental health support, and employment pathways.
Mentorship & Career Readiness
Through one-on-one mentorship and group workshops, we guide youth in building life skills, leadership, and confidence. Our career readiness track includes resume development, interview preparation, workplace etiquette, and direct connections to local employers. In partnership with Hennepin County workforce programs, we help youth gain sustainable employment that leads to financial independence.
Probation Transition Services
For youth on probation, stable housing and guidance are critical to breaking cycles of justice involvement. In partnership with Hennepin County Probation, we provide housing navigation, case planning, and employment pathways. Our services focus on accountability, stability, and empowerment—helping youth build a new direction for their future.
FYI Voucher Support
Youth transitioning out of foster care face some of the highest risks of homelessness. With the support of DHS and local agencies, we help participants secure and maintain their FYI housing vouchers. Our team provides wraparound case management, housing navigation, and independent living support to ensure a safe transition into adulthood.
Support for Survivors of Trafficking & Domestic Violence
Survivors of trafficking and domestic violence deserve safety and stability. In collaboration with HUD housing initiatives and community partners, we provide access to emergency and long-term housing, trauma-informed care, and advocacy. Our team ensures youth and young adults have the tools and support to heal, rebuild, and move forward with dignity.
